Context

On the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863), Cpl. Joseph W. Hitchcock of Col. G., 13th Vermont Volunteers was shot in the leg with this bullet. The bullet remained in his leg for nearly four years. When it finally came near the surface, he removed it himself with a jack-knife.
