Black wooden gavel with decoratively turned handle. The head is wrapped with a silver mount that is engraved with the inscription, "Charles A. Plumley, Speaker House of Representatives, Vermont 1912 / Presented by his classmates / Norwich University 1896".

Use

Used by Chalres A. Plumley while presiding over the Vermont House of Representatives and used several times during the terms served from 1934 to 1951 while presiding in the U.S. House of Representatives as Speaker pro tempore. Given to him by his Norwich class of 1896.

Context

Presented to Charles A. Plumley by his former Norwich classmates upon his election to the US House of Representatives in 1912. He used it several times as President Pro Tempore from 1934 to 1951.
