Birchbark Box

Birchbark Box

Description

Large, round birchbark box etched/inscribed with double scroll motif on lid and rectilinear motif on body.

Context

This large etched birch bark box from the east side of Lake Memphremagog has beautiful “double scroll” designs on the lid, a rarity in the American Abenaki area. Although the size and manufacture is similar to the much more common mid-Maine “Penobscot” bark boxes, its construction technique is more delicate and regionally distinctive.
