Crazy quilt pieced of various silks in satin, plain, brocade, and velvet weaves. The seams between each piece are decorated with embroidery--mostly feather stitch--and the pieces are highly decorated with embroidery and paint. Embroidered motifs include flowers, fan, crescent moon, store, star, daisy, musical staff, razor, person drawing, dog, fly, bird, butterfly, woman, cat, shaving cup and spider on a web. Painted motifs include strawberries, flowers, spider, insect, owl on the crescent moon, butterfly, and birds on branches. The center block is embroidered with the initials "AIG" and the date "1887". The quilt is backed with a cotton printed with a repeating design of thistles. The back has yarn ties, but they do not go through to the top layer.Context
