Description

Two-piece orange linen dress consisting of a tunic-style bodice and skirt. The waistline of the bodice sits tight on the body, causing the upper portion to fit loosely. There is a small triangular jumper attached the back neckline. The tunic secures up the center front and has a long peplum that falls over the skirt. It is embroidered with black French knots and stylized flowers. The walking skirt is slightly flared and has no embroidery.

While the donor was born in Montpelier, her mother, Ruth Raymond Jones (1895-1982) was born and raised in Ludlow, VT. Ruth's father, George W. Raymond (1867-1959) was a second-generation clothing merchant there. While we have no evidence, it seems likely that the 'high fashion' nature of this gift may be due to the family business. It's easy to imagine Ruth's mother, Lena Levey Raymond (1873-1938) walking in Ludlow dressed in this fashionable suit.
