Description

Black wool jacket with gold stripes and chevrons and buttons with eagles and one epaulet. The front is cut short and the chest area is stuffed to puff out. The back has tails.

Context

This jacket came from the Constitution House in Windsor. According to its paperwork, it was reviewed by someone with some costume expertise. The evaluation says that one epaulet might be a sign of rank and that there is no evidence of a second epaulet. However, an examination in 2025 suggests there was another epaulet (rounded depression in the wool where the button would have been located). the high collar is similar in style to suit coats in the early 19th century. Raw edges on the bottom were common in the early 19th century. After 1873, edges were turned or bound. Evaluator suggested this probably wasn't a military uniform, but might have been a military band.
