Saddlebag

Saddlebag

Entry/Object ID

1930.3.1.6a-b

Description

Saddlebag made of black and brown tanned leather with iron buckles. The interior is lined in canvas. When laying flat, the saddlebag is hourglass shaped. There is a hole in the middle of the hourglass for hanging over a stud attached to the saddle. Two long straps attached at the bottom of the bags would attach to saddle, possibly at the girth. Two short leather pieces at the top of the bags would slip under staples on the saddle. One of these has become detached from bag. Black leather is on the outward facing side, and brown leather on the side that faced the horse. The buckles appear to have originally had leather stitched over them. Some of this leather remains on the buckles of the long straps, but just the bare remnants remain on the buckles that close the bags.
