Description

Large pocket decorated with blue wool crewelwork embroidery in two shades. The embroidered design shows a large carnation at the base and curvilinear vines up the sides with flowers and leaves. The pocket has a slit in the center front with bound edges. There are remnants of a heart-shaped patch at the base of the opening. The top is edged with blue-and-white checked fabric, and there is woven tape extending from both top corners.

Context

From notes about various fabric objects by an unknown evaluator: "Small pocket, hand spun and woven linen, embroidered with two-ply wool and looks 18th century. Blue and white check (section) is hand spun and woven. Ties are braided cotton singles not well made but early. IR initials. Embroidered patterns of the period probably copied. Indigo dyed in various shades. The pale blue was probably a green in earlier life. Line with wonderful linen ticking - a "treasure."
