Gas price spikes and supply disruptions beginning in 1973 led to a national discussion about how to respond. One result was nationwide maximum speed limit of 55 mph. The American Automobile Association created a "Gas Watchers Guide" in 1975 that offered ways that its members -- car drivers -- could cut their gasoline costs and use.
