Description

White button with green lettering: "I'M / AN / ENERGY / SAVER.'' The button has a green silhouette of the state of Vermont with the energy saver "e" icon at the center of it beside the slogan. A label on the back reads, "1976 distributed by Vermont branch of American Automobile Assoc., Montpelier."

Context

Gas price spikes and supply disruptions beginning in 1973 led to a national discussion about how to respond. One result was nationwide maximum speed limit of 55 mph. The American Automobile Association created a "Gas Watchers Guide" in 1975 that offered ways that its members -- car drivers -- could cut their gasoline costs and use. This pin may have been part of that campaign that encouraged car pooling, modest speeds, consolidating trips and keeping cars in tune.
