Ceremonial sword and scabbard. The sword grip is made of dark wood shaped with finger grips. The guard and pommel are gold-toned metal with an acorn-shaped gold tassel. The slightly curved blade is engraved with flowers, military symbols, an eagle with the words "E Pluribus Unum" on one side, and the initials "U.S." on the other side. Just beneath the guard, the blade is marked, "The M. C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, O." The scabbard is steel.Context
Used by Col. Merritt B. Roberts of Rupert, Vermont, as part of the National Guard. Roberts was part of the Governor's Home Guard from 1904 to 1906 under Governor Charles Bell.Acquisition
