This service cap has a stiff and round crown of navy blue wool. The center front is embroidered in gold with the seal of the State of Vermont and the motto, "Freedom and Unity". The short black brim is embroidered with oak leaves. On either side of the cap, there are brass buttons, and a gold band runs between them. The inside of the crown is labeled, "The M.C. Lilley & Co. Columbus, Ohio Manufacturers of Military and Society Goods". There is a paper sticker on the band that reads, "7 1/8", indicating the hat's size.Context
Worn by Merritt B. Roberts of Rupert, Vermont, as a member of the Governor's Home Guard, a wing of the Vermont National Guard, between 1904 and 1906. Roberts was appointed a Colonel in the National Guard by Governor Charles J. Bell and was part of the Governor's military entourage.Acquisition
