Context

The I.O.G.T. stands for International Organization of Good Templars and was a temperance fraternal group founded in 1851 in Utica, N.Y. It was one of the few organizations that welcomed women, not only as members, but to leadership positions. And some lodges admitted black members until after the Civil War when dual lodges were allowed. The organization also had the name American Independent Order of Good Templars. One source of more information about the I.O.G.T. is http://www.iogt.us/iogt.php?p=35.
