Description

Circular, navy blue wool cape with black velvet falling collar. The cape opens up the center front and secures at the neck with a large metal hook and eye. There is a large silk cord frog across the front that secures at the shoulders. There are interior slit pockets on both sides of the open. The right pocket has a label that reads, "B. Turk & Bro. Burlington, Vt." and a handwritten label that reads, "Col. M. B. Roberts Jan. '05".

Context

Worn by Col. Merritt B. Roberts of Rupert, Vermont, as part of the National Guard. Roberts was part of the Governor's Home Guard from 1904 to 1906 under Governor Charles Bell.
