Military uniform consisting of a jacket and pants. The jacket is black wool trimmed with black braid and has rectangular epaulets embroidered in gold and silver with a spread eagle. The initials VT are on either side of the collar opening. The jacket secures up the center front with six buttons, hidden beneath a placket. There are 5-inch slits at the hem on the side seams with hooks and eyes to secure. The body is lined with black silk and the sleeves are lined with brown and white striped cotton. A label at the neckline reads, "B. Turk & Bro. Burlington, Vt." The pants are made of the same black wool. There are two side and two back pockets and a watch pocket (on the right side). There are 6 buttons on the inside of the waistband for attaching suspenders. The pants have a center fly that secures with 4 buttons. The waistline is faced the same striped fabric that lines the sleeves. The lining of the watch pocket has the handwritten inscription, "Col. Roberts 35 19 17 33 1/4".Context
Worn by Col. Merritt B. Roberts of Rupert, Vermont, as part of the National Guard. Roberts was part of the Governor's Home Guard from 1904 to 1906 under Governor Charles Bell.Acquisition
