Description

Sampler on linen with three alphabets, the word "MODESTY", a poem, and several pictorial elements. At the top are two marking alphabets in black, pink, and blue, first capitals then lower case. The next alphabet in script capitals in pink and green. The next alphabet is stitched entirely with eyelet stitches in blue, pink, and black. Beneath the alphabet, the word "MODESTY" stretches across the entire piece, stitched in eyelets and with the Y and T inserted vertically on the end. Beneath the word is a simple border of a vine and flower buds. In the bottom section is the inscription, "A damask cheek and ivory arm/Shall ne'er my wishes win/Give me an animated form/That speaks a mind within/Sally Partridge's Sampler". Pictorial elements in the bottom section include five people, animals, several different patterns of flowers in vases, and flowering trees.
