Description

Rectangular, red-painted wooden box with loose lid and nailed corners. The lid lifts open with no hinges or closing mechanism, indicating the box may have been a shipping container rather than one meant to be regularly used. The top of the lid is framed with narrow, raised boards, though one side is now missing. One of the short ends is painted with either Chinese or Japanese characters running up the left side. A paper label on the same end bears the inked inscription, "HELEN TYLER/HER BOX./Daughter of Royall Tyler/and Laura Britton Keyes/his wife./Died September 18[49]50 aged 4/years."
