Description

A chain with two "dog" or military identification tags worn by soldiers in World War II. This tag reads, "Charles O. Baxter, 3119874 T43 44 Alice Baxter, 46 Grant Ave. Swanson VT." On the edge is a letter O and lower, a letter P.

Context

These belonged to Charles Oliver Baxter (1906-1971), who was born in Highgate, VT, worked in retail sales in Pennsylvania and Middlebury, Vermont, eventually buying and running Boucher Clothing Store in Swanton. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1942 and rose in rank to a second lieutenant. It appears that he spent the war stateside.
