Description

Cream-colored silk/wool blend dress. The dress has short sleeves, each with four tucks, over long dotted lace undersleeves. The same lace is used above the v-shaped neckline to create a high collar. There are two rows of buttons on either side of the center front; the buttons are in groups of four and placed at the shoulders, hip, and hem. The bodice has a pinafore-styled front created by outward-facing tucks. There is a slight train, and the hem is faced with glazed cotton.

Context

This dress was worn by Madge Rachel Richardson (1885-1937) at her marriage to Percy Edward Heald (1884-1969) in Chester, Vermont, on September 8, 1909. He was a banker and became president of the National Bank of Chester. They had four children, including the woman who donated the dress. Madge committed suicide at age 52 by jumping into a river. Percy remarried in 1955 to Lottie Veazey Taylor (1883-1964), a widow from Proctor.
