Context

John Burgess (1920-2007) was a Brattleboro attorney. He ran for Attorney General in 1962 but lost in the Republican primary. He ran for lieutenant governor in 1970 and won, and served two terms. He made a bid in 1976 to represent Vermont in the House of Representatives, but lost in the Republican primary to Jim Jeffords.
