Description

Dress uniform consisting of a coat and pants. The coat is made of navy blue wool and reaches to just above the wearer's knees. There are two rows of brass buttons (9 each row), and tall brass studs on the shoulders. The standing collar is edged in gold braid, and there is applied gold braid in a trefoil design above each sleeve cuff. The back of the coat has two gold buttons at the waist with a kick pleat below, into which are sewn slit pockets. The body of the coat is lined in black silk and the sleeves are line in red-striped white cotton. A tag at the collar reads, "B. Turk & Bro. Burlington, Vt." and a label written on a pocket under the collar reads, "Col. M. B. Roberts 1904". The pants are made of navy blue wool with a wide line of gold braid accenting the outer seams. There is a center fly that secures with four metal buttons. There are six buttons around the inside of the waistband for attaching suspenders. The waistband is faced with the same red-striped cotton that lines the sleeves. There is a small watch pocket on the left side at the waist with the handwritten label, "Col. M. B. Robert 35 19 17 3-3 1/4".

Context

Worn by Col. Merritt B. Roberts of Rupert, Vermont, as part of the National Guard. Roberts was part of the Governor's Home Guard from 1904 to 1906 under Governor Charles Bell.
