Description

Round blue button with three green mountains across the bottom quarter. It has the white inscription, "Susan Sweetser FOR CONGRESS" on the blue, and "'96" on the mountains. In tiny print along the reverse edge of the top is the inscription, "PD. FOR BY SWEETSER '96 COMM. 139 MAIN STREET MONTPELIER, VERMONT 05602 (802) 229-1996".

Context

Made for Republican Susan Sweetser's unsuccessful campaign for US House of Representatives in 1996. She lost to Bernie Sanders, the independent incumbent. Jack Long, a Democrat, was also on the ballot. Sweetser had previously served two terms in the Vermont Senate as one of six senators from Chittenden County. She tried to return to the state senate in 1998, but failed to make the cut.
