Description

Landscape print showing a snowy city scene. there is a line of trees down the center of the composition, leading away from the viewer. The boundaries of the scene are lined with large, Victorian residential buildings. To the left of the trees are two figures in a sleigh being pulled by a donkey. A lone, dark figure is walking away from the viewer to the right of the trees. The lower left corner has the inscription, "A Winter's Day in Montpelier, Vt.", and the lower right is signed, "J.F. Gilman '86". The back is completely filled with a handwritten note that reads, "This was done in 1889 - shows old granite posts & chains and iron fence in front of State House - Old DeBoer (maybe Reed) House before it was split and moved for construction of National Life - The Reed (Goerge) house back of that where Maurice Dewey lived (8 Bailey Ave) was moved in 2 sections onto a newly constructed basement and land filled by dirt from excavation for the new building - It took 3 weeks to move the sections on rollers to new location - A robin over front bed room blinds raised her young in transit and kept her nest in new location. This also shows at left the square rooming and boarding house, The Riverside, which was made out of the modern structure first built for the Episcopalian (Christ) Church and used for services till the new granite Church (opposite Court house) was put into use - Note "pung" deep in snow and man plodding along the would-be walk - no ploughs then - only snow rollers -"
