Description

Engraving on an interior page of "Harper's Weekly". The image shows 4 men and 1 woman around a tombstone. The men stand to the left of the tombstone and wear various expressions, from sadness to annoyance. They are all wearing black suits. 3 of the men are holding top hats while the man at the front has let his fall to the ground. A newspaper if the man's coat pocket reads, "STONE STOCKS / NEW SCHEMES / ERIE R". The woman is two the right of the grave and is dressed as an allegory of justice, with a sword and scale in her left hand. She is touching her eye with her right hand. The tombstone has the partial inscription, "[H]ERE [LI]ES FISK. JR". The image is labeled at the center bottom, "DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES". Below the illustration is an article condemning the surviving managers of the Erie Road for making their assassinated partner the scapegoat for the program's corruption. It is followed by the start of an article entitled, "Slaughter of Buffaloes". The back of the page is printed with four columns containing articles and advertisements.
