Round political button. The white button is printed with a green tulip at the top, the words "green up" outlined in green at the center, and the looped logo for Green Up Day in white with green ground below.Context
The first Green Up Day was held on April 18, 1970. In a letter written in 1984, former Gov. Deane Davis explained the origin for the now annual event. Robert Babcock, reporter for the Burlington Free Press, came to Davis after being appalled at the roadside litter that appeared as the snow melted in March 1969. He suggested to Davis that the state should sponsor a clean-up day. Davis liked the idea and set up a planning committee. Rather than rush to hold the event in 1969, the committee scheduled it for 1970. Babcock got a leave from the newspaper to work full-time on planning the event. For the first event, the interstate was closed from 9 a.m. to noon.Acquisition
