Description

Khaki canvas haversack the words, "Frederic Edwards Montpelier Vermont U. S. A." precisely inked on the back. The bag closes with a flap that reaches from the top back to the bottom front, and secures with a two metal buckles on leather straps. There are two metal rings at the top back, to which a long leather strap attaches with hooks. There is a canvas strap attached to the left side of the back. The end is looped around a metal D-ring, which can attach to a hook on the right side. There is an addition metal hook at the midway point of the strap.

Context

Used by Frederic Edwards of Montpelier, Vermont during World War I. Edwards stepped away from working as the Principal of Montpelier High School to take a post as a secretary for the YMCA during WWI.
