Description

Side drum with maple shell. The shell is nailed at the seam with copper nails. The drum has an inner hoop of ash (about 15 mm wide). There is a vent hole in the side edged with horn. The drum has counterhoops made of dark-stained maple, each with eight holes for stringing rope. Each rim has eight iron hooks placed over the holes. Rope (not original) is strung in a zigzag pattern between the hooks. There are eight leather braces (four original). The original braces have two lobes with serrated edges and a flower design stamped onto each lobe. There are six gut snares, each with a leather tab at one end and a brass tensioner at the other end. The heads are vellum over wood fleshhoops. The drum has a printed label that reads, "Massachusetts Drum Manufactory John C. Haynes & Co., 33 Court Street, Boston wholesale and retail dealers in Sheet Music Musical Instruments and Musical Merchandise of every description Particular Attention Paid to Repairing Musical Instruments". Below the label is the handwritten inscription, "J. C. Haynes Co." in pencil.
