Light mountain transit used by Herbert Miller McIntosh, first Vermont state surveyor. McIntosh (1861-1942) became state engineer in 1917. He was born in Bethel, but lived and worked in Burlington after graduating from University of Vermont in 1890. He started an engineering firm in 1892 and was associated with McIntosh and Crandall Engineering Co. from 1905-1927. His daughter, Jane Patterson McIntosh (1899-1987) inherited and likely used the transit as she, too, was a civil engineer. She graduated from the University of Vermont in 1922 and was the first female to graduate from UVM's civil engineering program.Acquisition
