Description

Stamp molded flatware kit, consisting of a spoon, two-tined fork, and knife. The handle of the knife is made of a flat piece of steel folded back to create a hollow space, into which the spoon and fork fit securely. When the pieces are put together, the fork is in the center, and the underside of the spoon faces outward. The spoon has a large bowl with a point tip. The spoon's handle is stamped with the mark, "L & G. PAT. A[illeg]" and crudely engraved with the word "Howes". The knife blade is stamped with the mark, "Hard [illeg] NOV.12 1861 CAST-STEEL".

Context

Used by Phil Howe during the Spanish-American War, or his father, Edward Howes, during the Civil War.
