Description

Broken top and neck of a champagne bottle, festooned with red, white and blue striped ribbons (1), used to christen the Battleship "Vermont" on August 31, 1905. Other ribbons and an additional bow made of the same striped material are not attached to the bottle. Rectangular wooden box containing bottle and ribbons (2b) and interlocking lid (2ba). Pink foil covering on the top of the bottle shows the name G.H. Mumm & Co. The glass is green and cork is in place.

Context

Jennie Bell (daughter of then governor Charles J. Bell) christened the "Vermont", attended by two Vermont "maids", Mary E. Morse (mother of the donor) and Virginia E. Perry. As described in "The Vermonter" Vol. XI, No. 3, October 1905, "... Miss Jennie Bell swung her right arm and struck a blow with the dangling, beribboned bottle squarely on the port side of the ram bow and cried, "I christen thee Vermont!""
