Berry Basket

Berry Basket

Description

Folded birchbark basket with bent-wood handle and basswood binding

Context

This is an example of the common expedient berry basket that figures in oral histories about making a quick basket in the woods after discovering a patch of blueberries or blackberries. The bark is thin, and not removed “down to the cambium,” so it was just torn off, the basswood lacings can be collected quickly, and do not need processing as does spruce root used for permanent containers, and the split sapling bail handle is a short whittle. Unfortunately these baskets are very fragile and few survive.
