Description

1st Vermont Cavalry regimental flag with a staff sleeve. It has a blue ground. At the center is a hand-painted seal, the left half of which shows the Vermont state seal and the right half of which shows the United States flag. A banner above the seal reads, "1st REGT. VERMONT VOLR. CAVR." A banner below the seal reads, "FREEDOM AND UNITY". The top and bottom edges are trimmed with gold fringe. The words, "Tiffany & Co" are embroiderd in the left corner.

Context

This flag was issued in order to replace a similar flag that was lost in Shenandoah Valley when the baggage train was burnt. In late July, the new standard, "of the same material and design as the original" reached the camp of the 1st Vermont Cavalry.
