Rectangular paper money issued by the State of Vermont. The bill consists of a white rectangle of paper with straight cut edges on the top and bottom, a torn edge on the right, and a concave curve cut into the left edge. It is printed with a decorative floral border and the printed inscription, "No. [320] STATE OF VERMONT, TREASURER'S OFFICE, Tinsmoth, [June 18th, 1787] THIS ORDER will be received into the treafury for the Sum of [Seven pounds seventeen shill & 4d] of either the collectors of the Hard Money Taxes, that have or shall be granted by the legiflature of this State. [£7.17..4] Witnefs, [S. Mattocks] Treafurer." with the bracketed text handwritten in ink.Context
Issued by the State of Vermont for paying soldiers on credit during and shortly following the Revolutionary War. The certificates were redeemed by matching the left edge of the certificate to the corresponding torn stub, kept by the State.Acquisition
