Description

Two-piece dress consisting of a bodice and skirt. Both pieces are constructed of cream and light-pink taffeta. The bodice has 3/4-length sleeves decorated at the cuffs with pleats and bows. The hem extend in a circle at the back, decorated with pleats and bow. The bodice opens at the center front and secures with self fabric covered buttons. The collar is decorated with multiple layers of lace. The sleeves and the center front of the bodice are pink and the sides of the bodice and cuff bands are cream. The skirt is draped in a complicated, asymmetrical fashion, with portions of the hem trimmed with chenille tassels. The front drape and the side pieces are pink, and the the center back piece is gathered cream. The sides are decorated with faux-draped cream sashes.

Context

Worn by Leonora Brooks Shepherd to the opening ball of the Pavilion Hotel in Montpelier, Vermont. The dress was remade from two of Shepherd's dresses: the pink from a dress in her trousseau, and the cream from her wedding dress.
