We record, under the appropriate head, the death of the Hon. Salmon F. Dutton for many years the able Judge of the Windsor Probate District. Most faithfully and efficiently has he filled the office. He was very generally regarded as the best Probate lawyer in the State. He had labored with impaired health for a long time, and his death was not altogether unexpected; yet his loss in our community will be seriously felt-- Vermont Journal, 1857
Salmon F. Dutton was a lawyer, judge of probate, and state senator from Cavendish, Vermont. The Dutton family were early and prominent settlers in Cavendish. Salmon's daughter Emily married Redfield Proctor in 1858, thereby ending a 75-year feud between the two well-known families over toll road access and payment. The merger proved to a propitious event for Vermont, since three governors and a United States Senator came from this Dutton-Proctor line. Family members found this sign in the Redfield Proctor, Jr. house in Proctor, Vermont when they cleaned it out before its sale.Label
