Description

2-sided commemorative medal. One side is molded with an image of a man in a canoe approaching a shoreline where a shirtless man wearing a warbonnet is waiting. The inscription, "350 ANNIVERSARY of DISCOVERY of LAKE CHAMPLAIN / Samuel de Champlain", rings the edge. The other side is molded with an image of a slatted train boxcar, the seal of Vermont and the coat of arms of France. The inscription, "MERCI BOX CARS to VERMONT and NEW YORK 1948 / by Repubulic [sic] of France."

Context

Made to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the first sighting of Lake Champlain by a European, and the 10 year anniversary of the arrival of the Merci Train.
