Michael Bernhardt of Londonderry served as a Republican representative in the Vermont House from 1981-1988, including two terms as Republican House leader. He was the Republican candidate for governor in 1988, losing to incumbent Democrat Madeleine Kunin. He ran for lieutenant governor (again as a Republican) in 1990 but lost to Democrat Howard Dean.
