Oval, silver-toned metal bank with slots on the sides for inserting coins, each labeled for the type of coin (i.e. DIMES, NICKELS). Beneath each slot is a vertical line of small viewing holes. Surrounding the viewing holes are etched hash lines with the dollar amount that corresponds with the stack of coins inside. There is a single slot on the back for inserting bills. The top of the bank is mounted with an oval plaque that reads, "MONTPELIER NATIONAL BANK MONTPELIER, VERMONT", around the edge. At the center is the logo for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation flanked by two smaller additional plaques that read, "No / 169".
The bottom is stamped with the mark, "NEW MODEL CLEARVUE BANK / EARL SERVICE FOR BANKS / MELROSE, MASS. U.S.A. / OWNERS OF CLEARVUE REGISTERING BANK ORIGINAL PATENT NO. 1703994 OTHER PATENTS PENDING". At the center is a lock with an opening for a two-pronged key.Use
Banks like these were distributed, often to children, to encourage them to deposit money into their bank accounts. The distributing banks retained the key, so the device had to be taken into the bank to empty the money.Context
