Rectangular paper money issued by the State of Vermont. The bill consists of a white rectangle of paper with cut edges on the top and bottom and torn edges of the two sides; the right is torn straight, but the left is torn quite roughly in a wavy pattern. It is printed with a decorative floral border and the printed inscription, "No. [694] STATE OF VERMONT, TREASURER'S OFFICE, Sunderland, [Sept. 17th, 1785] THIS ORDER will be received into the treafury for the fum of [Fortysix Pounds 10/3 ====] of either the collectors of a tax, granted by the legiflature at the feffion in Bennington, in March, 1784, of two pence on the pound. [£46..10..3] Witnefs, [I. Allen] Treafurer." with the bracketed text handwritten in ink.Context
Issued by the State of Vermont for paying soldiers on credit during and shortly following the Revolutionary War. The certificates were redeemed by matching the the wavy-torn side of the certificate to the corresponding torn stub, kept by the State.Acquisition
