Description

Beaded purse. The purse is decorated with an allover covering of tiny beads forming a pink rose design in a band around the top two-thirds and a smaller white diamond pattern on a maroon ground in the bottom third. Beaded fringe extends from the bottom third at regular intervals, and there is a silk drawstring closure at the top. A note kept inside the purse reads, "I carried cookies to church in Albany VT in 1855 in this bag. Lucy Davis" in pencil. Beads from broken fringe in baggie with purse.

Context

Lucy Abigail Davis was born in 1852 in Albany, Vermont. She married Isaac Newton Evans (1848-1922), an Iowa farmer, in 1872 and they lived and farmed in Missouri and South Dakota. They had three sons and according to census records, adopted a daughter and a son. Lucy died in 1938 in Missouri.
