Description

One pieces yellow silk ball gown with fitted bodice, trimmed with ivory lace at the neckline, cuffs and hemline. There is yellow ribbon trim at the back of the bodice that extends down the length of the skirt. The bodice is fitted to the wearer with 20 rows of corded gathers around the torso. The same gathers are at the sleeve cuffs, and the tops of the sleeves are gathered vertically. The hem of the skirt is held out with boning. The dress opens at the side, securing with hooks and eyes.

Context

According to family history, this dress was worn by Leonora Brooks Shepard of Montpelier, VT, to the inaugural ball of President Ulysses S. Grant.
