Description

Large grey stoneware crock with a U-shaped handle on either side near the top rim. The front is stamped with the inscription, "J & E. NORTO BENNINGTON V[T]" and the number 1-1/6. The interior is glazed dark brown. The rim is slightly drooped.

Context

Owned by George W. Simmons of Bennington, Vermont. Simmons was a tinsmith who worked next door to the Norton pottery company and would buy the pottery's seconds (ware with imperfections).
