A square section of wallpaper produced shortly after the death of George Washington in 1799. The wallpaper features columns, two figures flanking a monument topped with an urn and an eagle with a drooping head. The monument is inscribed with the words, "Sacred to Washington."Context
According to a 1928 letter from John Spargo, president of the Bennington Historical Museum, to a Miss Wright at the Vermont Historical Society, this square of wallpaper had com from the hall of the mansion of Vermont Gov. Isaac Tichener. It is only a partial section of the entire "Sacred to Washington" design, Spargo explains. He says a full panel is at the Bennington Museum.Acquisition
