Description

Wooden cane with silver knob-style handle engraved with the label, "J. H. H. 1865," and intricately chased with a flora design. The cane is adorned with sixteen silver triangles that have been skillfully inlaid and securely fastened. The cane has a silver tip.

Context

Made by Sergeant John H. Hurley of Northfield, Vermont, during Civil War. According to family history, Hurley made it from a tree root, using only a jack knife and a file.
