Description

Red-painted chest. The corners of the chest are held by dovetail joints. There is a large keyhole at the center front.

Context

According to family history, this chest was taken from a Pirate vessel on the High Seas by John Paul Jones during the American Revolutionary War. After its contents (women's clothing) was distributed among Jones' crew, he gave the chest to William Hodgkins. After Jones stranded Hodgkins in France, he worked his way back home to America. He finally settled in Grand Isle, Vermont.
