Context

Pin of the Vermont Freedom To Marry Task Force, established in 1995 as an offshoot of the Vermont Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The task force helped three same-sex couples with their 1997 lawsuit against the state after they were refused marriage licenses. The Vermont Supreme Court ruled on Dec. 20, 1999 that same-sex couples were entitled under the Vermont Constitution to the same benefits and protections as married opposite sex couples, but the court left it to the Legislature to devise a solution. In 2000, the Legislature's solution was civil unions, a "separate but equal" legal union for same-sex couples. In 2009, the Legislature revisited the issue and approved marriage for same-sex couples.
