Pin of the Vermont Freedom To Marry Task Force, established in 1995 as an offshoot of the Vermont Coalition for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The task force helped three same-sex couples with their 1997 lawsuit against the state after they were refused marriage licenses. The Vermont Supreme Court ruled on Dec. 20, 1999 that same-sex couples were entitled under the Vermont Constitution to the same benefits and protections as married opposite sex couples, but the court left it to the Legislature to devise a solution. In 2000, the Legislature's solution was civil unions, a "separate but equal" legal union for same-sex couples. In 2009, the Legislature revisited the issue and approved marriage for same-sex couples.Acquisition
