Starting in 1921, Vermont schools could apply for a state "STANDARD" or "SUPERIOR" enameled plate to display. Under this system, meant originally to encourage improvements to rural schoolhouses, approval points were granted for building improvements such as painted walls, electrical lighting, and flush toilets. While the program phased out in the 1970s, signs such as these can still be found on current and former school buildings around Vermont.
