Description

Rectangular cap plate embossed with a spread eagle in the center. The eagle has an American flag shield on its chest and is holding a laurel branch in its right talon. Above the eagle is a banner with the words, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and below the eagle is a laurel bow. The bottom right corner is detached.

Use

Cap plates were worn on hats by members of militia.

Context

Found embedded in a maple tree in Isle La Motte, Vermont, in 1884 by Captain William Montgomery.
