Large tin plate with a molded rim and a large hole near the edge, spanning the width of the rim. The hole appears to have been punched from the front to the back.

Context

This plate was in the haversack of Cpl. Joseph W. Hitchcock of Co. G., 13th Vermont Volunteers. On the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3, 1863), he was shot in the leg through the plate. The bullet remained in his leg for nearly four years. When it finally came near the surface, he removed it himself with a jack-knife.
