Description

Small shield shaped, enameled pin. The pin has a dark blue top third and vertical red and white striped lower two-thirds. On the blue enameled section are the letters, "USA AAAD" in gold, referencing the American Athletic Association of the Deaf. The pin has a straight backing to affix to fabric.

Context

Worn and earned by by Herbert P. Holbrook who was a class A ski jumper and olympic cross-country skier. He was an alumnus of the Austine School for the Deaf, and admitted to the AAAD (American Athletic Association for the Deaf) in 1964, when he also made the New York Times News twice that year. He competed in Berchtesgaden (West Germany) in the 1960s and in the Meribel Olympics in France in 1979.
