Description

Misshapen leather shoe with large hole in the sole. The upper is formed in two parts: front and back. The sole is formed of stacked leather, the toe and heel sections held with several small tacks. There is a large circular hole in the toe portion of the sole, just beneath the ball of the wearer's foot.

Context

The hole is from a shell that injured the wearer, Laureston E. Manley, during the battle of Gettysburg.
